Since I dislike the dismally slow 24 fps frame rate of current movies I've been wondering for awhile what 1080p HD at 60 fps might look like, especially if it was highly detailed. But before today I had yet to ever see any.
So I made one, courtesy of a very nice free very hi rez panoramic photo I found on MorgeFile.
I downsampled this and turned it into a 33 second HD WMV9 avi clip at 60 fps, panning horizontally at exactly 1 pixel / frame. It's not a very exciting clip but is fairly detailed and artifact free. And because of the filtering and predictable motion the entire clip compresses very well, taking less than 5 MB.
You can see it at: www3.impacthosting.com/trbarry/Valley_Of_Fire_1080p_60fps.avi
I don't know if anyone can play it smoothly at full speed (I can't) so one of the main advantages may be lost until we all get faster computers. But I think this is still my own format of choice given the hardware power.

I can play it in Windows Media Player (Version 10?) on a 3.0 GHz machine. It also plays fairly smoothly in Winamp. Great detail!

Have either of you guys checked to see if you are getting the entire 60 (59.94) fps? My 2.4 Ghz P4 doesn't even come close. And while my Linkplayer can handle HD WMV9 clips it totally chokes on this one.
I'm curious what sort of machine is needed since I'm probably ready to build another box again.

Oooooh. Spooky!;)
It pans smoothly but it can't catch up as far as the color fill goes. On my setup (approx 3200+ Athlon) I am getting about 37.5fps with no dropped frames. This is with the straight VMR7 overlay.

Media Player 6.4 gets 43fps as reported by the Video Renderer filter. It didn't give a consistent frame count so its definetly dropping frames, which is also visible since it jumps around a bit.
mplayer benchmark gave me this output:
BENCHMARKs: VC: 34.514s VO: 9.871s A: 0.000s Sys: 0.097s = 44.482s
BENCHMARK%: VC: 77.5909% VO: 22.1910% A: 0.0000% Sys: 0.2181% = 100.0000%
Since the clip is supposed to be 33s long, the VideoCodec part is running almost good, but it gets really screwed by the VideoOutput part of mplayer. Can you make the same clip using XviD just to check on the perf of other codecs? I've been able to play 1080p content on XviD at full speed before.

runs smooth as butter in windows media.
turn it into an h.264 and it would probably be a slide show.

all of the clips on microsoft's site are 24fps, correct? are there even any 720p 60fps clips around for download?

Yep, all the movies and most of the trailers will be 24 fps. There was some discussion of 60 fps in the various Linkplayer2 threads.

I made an Xvid version too. But it was late last night and I just specified quant=2 (2 bframes at q=3) so its about 19 MB in size. See:
www3.impacthosting.com/trbarry/Valley_Of_Fire_1080p_60fps_Xvid.avi
It doesn't play on my machine but I have some stuff going on in the background I don't want to stop now so it's maybe not a fair test.

On my 3.2 Prescott the WMV clip plays smoothly with ZP with only 15% CPU usage!!! (on a 6600Gt, of course). With TT it's 20-25%, with colors looking a little more 'washed-out' than with ZP

How do you manage that? Do you have some sort of wmv accel enabled in your graphics card or something? Are you sure you are showing all the frames?

Yes, the VMP10 patch that enables WMV hardware acceleration.
Unfortunately I have to use full screen renderless exclusive on ZP and have no way to see the VMR9 filter properties as no right-click mouse is available. But after applying this patch there's no 1080p wmv clip that I can't play smoothly on my rig.
Interesting enough is that I got a liittle higher CPU usage with an ATI than with the 6600GT. But it's really fine with bothc cards.

Tom, the Xvid version plays fine (ZP or TT) up to a certain point (maybe I need to download it again). Anyway CPU usage this time was predictably higher (50%). With ZP and ffdshow in the chain PQ was again far better than in TT (colours washed out again).

Sample
Plays fine (and looks stunning) on my rig at full 60 fps synced to 60 Hz.
6800 Ultra
latest ZoomPlayer
A64 3800+
1.5 GB PC3200
etc.
(I also have the WMV patch installed but I dunno if it does anything for the 6800 boards, nor do I know if it has any effects on apps besides WMV10)

From another thread:
I opened WMP10: Tools-->Option-->Performance-->Advanced, and turned off video overlays. The 1080i video clip went from 1 frame every three seconds to silkly smooth.. nice tweak! But without overlay enabled, it won't play full-screen. bummer.
Fortunately, it plays smoother and in full screen with no audio lag in Winamp5.. that's sad on MS's part! (True of WMV-HD 720p, too, which runs @ 50% CPU. 1080i WMV-HD clips are stuttered @ 100% cpu)
